Why Books in Birthday Bags?
By James Kwee
Among the toys, the candy, and other fun items that fill a birthday bag, another simple treasure can often be found. Cheerful Givers has long encouraged the inclusion of an item that is both enjoyable and educational -- a book.
Studies show that it is crucial for children to begin developing their reading skills at a young age if they aspire to a life of success.
In fact, 70% of people possessing the lowest literary skills are without a full or part time job according to The National Adult Literacy Survey. Additional research indicates that another 43% of such individuals live in poverty. Even more sobering is the fact that there is conclusive evidence linking low literacy to criminal behavior and violence, as well as many other problems.
Cheerful Givers aims to include books in birthday bags to ensure that children are provided with something that encourages them to read and helps them overcome the challenges brought on by illiteracy. They also want every child to be able to experience the joy of owning their own book.
If you would like to support literacy while helping to make a child’s birthday brighter, a financial donation allows the organization to purchase books from supportive suppliers at greatly reduced prices. Or, if you know of a publisher or store that might be willing to donate books, contact Karen@cheerfulgivers.org.
