Q: How did Cheerful Givers get started?
A:
Robin Maynard Steele wanted to make a difference and after talking to the Director of a local shelter, she found out that many children were not being recognized on their birthday because their parents couldn’t afford to give them anything. See Our Founder’s Story.

Q: Who receives the birthday bags?
A:
Parents of children who are staying in shelters or who rely on food shelves throughout Minnesota receive the bags to give to their children. Those who assemble birthday bags are encouraged to take them to shelters or food shelves in their own community.

Q: What age children receive the bags?
A:
Typically ages 3 – 12

Q: Should bags be separated for boys & girls?
A:
No, the bags usually contain items that appeal to both boys and girls because it’s not possible to ensure that they can be separated at all the shelters and food shelves.

Q: What size bags do you use?
A:
The bags can vary from a standard size gift bag with handles to a cellophane or clear plastic bag. Since you don’t usually know what size items you might be including, it’s best to plan for larger bags (8″x10″ or larger).

Q: How can I get toys donated?
A:
The best way is to ask someone you know who works for a company or organization that might be able to provide them. Encourage them to check out the Cheerful Givers web site for further information about the organization (www.cheerfulgivers.org). You can also ask at local toy or party goods stores.

Q: How do I find a food shelf or shelter near me?
A:
You can use the list on our website for Twin Cities area shelters and food shelves, or contact your county social services department for shelters or food shelves near you.
