3rd, 4th and 5th graders at St. John the Baptist School in Savage, Minnesota took time on their spring break to learn about Cheerful Givers and to fill some birthday bags. In reflecting on their activity, they each wrote about one thing they learned. Anna, age 11, said “I learned there are 140,000 kids that don’t get birthday presents in Minnesota” and Emma, age 9, commented “That not everybody gets presents but everybody deserves one.”
After competing in a team-building activity called Birthday Bag Bingo, the kids demonstrated their artistic ability in a smiling coloring contest.

The “Great Minnesota Birthday Party” captured the attention of hundreds of mall-goers on Saturday, March 27 at the Mall of America which Governor Pawlenty proclaimed Cheerful Givers Day throughout the state. M.A. Rosko of Fox 9 News kicked off the event followed by Sergeant First Class Billy Todd of the U.S. Army reading the proclamation. Continue reading »

Each month there are thousands of kids whose birthdays pass without any recognition. Our hope is that we can change that through people like you who are willing to make a commitment to provide a birthday gift bag for one, five or ten children each month. Thanks to Jenny Friedman, Executive Director of Doing Good Together for promoting our need for crayons to go along with a large donation of coloring books we received. She simply said:
“Looking for something simple that your family, co-workers, school, scout, civic or church group can do to help kids? How about collecting new boxes of crayons and sending them to Cheerful Givers? Any age can help shop and donate. Very little time commitment needed.”
Kristen Marsan used the opportunity to teach her kids about helping others and she commented: “The poor Wal-Mart clerk had to maneuver huge piles of quarters and dimes. I’m praying that even those little boxes of crayons (and all the rest that you do) are used to encourage other people, both big and small!”
Note: We still need lots of crayons!

We were very pleased to receive a donation of $1,500 from the Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation to support our birthday bag gift program. Matt Oldani, Foundation Bear, writes “We are thrilled to be able to partner with you to help children.”

Was an amazing day today as our Cheerful Givers volunteers partnered with the Minnesota Vikings to fill 300 birthday gift bags at their Winter Park facility!
While players had returned home at 4 am from their previous nights’ game in Chicago, they managed to be wide awake and willing to help at 10 am. KARE 11 news captured a bit of the event on their 6 pm news tonight and Fox Sports will be broadcasting the event on Sunday when Cheerful Givers will be honored with a “Hometown Hero” award during the Vikings game with the NY Giants.

This year many people are rethinking their holiday gift giving and want to do something to reach out to those who are really struggling. One way to do that is with a Cheerful Givers certificate which you can print after you make any size donation. Many parents today often spend $100 on one holiday gift for their child which lasts a short while. Yet that same $100 could provide toy-filled birthday gift bags for ten economically disadvantaged children. The Robert Lewis House is one of the local women’s shelters that receive Cheerful Givers birthday bags for the children that stay there. This month, however, we are shifting the focus from birthdays to Thanksgiving and learning a little bit about how the Robert Lewis House residents celebrate during this special holiday.

Imagine how the simplest of gestures can make a big impact. That’s what the students at a Brooklyn Park work training program are experiencing. The group of teens, living with a variety of disabilities and special needs, has adopted Cheerful Givers as a community service project. The students regularly work together to assemble big colorful birthday bags, filled with toys, books, games and treats, for younger, disadvantaged children. The bags, complete with ribbons and handmade birthday cards, are then distributed to Second Harvest Heartland where parents in need can pick one up for their child’s birthday. Continue reading »
