dscf25421A county fair means different things to different people. To some, it’s the thrill of being stopped at the top of the ferris wheel, and to others it’s those pronto pups and fair food that only appear in the summer. For a group of nonprofit organizations that serve Dakota County, the fair was an opportunity to tell their story to fair-goers and a chance to offer a hands-on volunteer experience to fill birthday bags for Cheerful Givers.

Sunday, August 16 was the second annual “Honoring Volunteers Day” at the Dakota County Fair, and participating organizations, such as ours, had an opportunity to honor volunteers with treats and prize drawings. A bonus to this year’s event was the great music provided by Del Barber.

The Birthday Bag Blitz has become one of the school’s favorite service projects. It is one the students can really relate to. They know what it is like to receive gifts on their birthday and can imagine what it would be like not to receive birthday gifts. The students learn empathy and feel good about themselves when they understand that they are helping less fortunate children in their community. — June Leahy, Beacon Academy
