namedayBy Natasha L. Kohlhoff Polak

Name Day is a day when you celebrate your first name, in much the same way as your birthday. The only difference is that the date you were born doesn’t apply; you simply share this special day with others who have your first name.

Originally started as a European tradition during the Middle Ages, 365 names are chosen to match each day of the year. The names might be birthdates of famous people who share your name, or have something to do with other holidays or historical events that occurred on a particular date. Days commemorating saints are especially popular for a given Name Day – such as England’s National St. George’s Day (April 23rd).

Celebrating Name Day is a mix of birthday traditions and general fanfare. Instead of sharing the day with family and close friends, everyone can be included. Presents are not necessary, although in some countries you might be given a bottle of wine or some chocolates. Lavish meals and desserts for the day are community-wide, where everyone takes part in the festivities.

Perhaps the greatest honor is having your name passed down within your family, so that your name may be continued to be celebrated for many years.

When you share with someone your appreciation and gratitude, they will not forget you. Appreciation will return to you many times. Thanks.
