Three Dakota County nonprofits will celebrate national Make a Difference Day on Saturday, Oct. 27, by assembling 500 birthday gift bags for underprivileged kids.

Cheerful Givers, the organization dedicated to providing birthday gift bags to less fortunate children, has partnered with Smoke Free Dakota and Kids ‘n Kinship to throw this Birthday Bag Bash to make a difference in the community.

Cheerful givers relies on in-kind donations to provide the contents of the birthday bags it assembles. The bags are delivered to food shelves and homeless shelters, where less fortunate parents may pick up the gift bags and celebrate the lives of their children. It’s a concept that to date has impacted the lives of more than 200,000 Minnesota children and their families.

“This gathering will allow kids and their mentors from Kids ‘n Kinship to create a special birthday bag for a needy child,” said Karen Kitchel, president of Cheerful Givers. “What better way to teach a child the power of giving back, of making a difference in someone else’s life?”

Board members from three nonprofit organizations will also be at hand and assembling bags from 1 to 2 p.m. at Thomson West in Eagan. Sponsors include the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits (Social Action Leaders Network of Dakota County), Smoke Free Dakota, and host Thomson West.
