An idea I’ve used when trying to find a meaningful gift for kids is to give them a blank $20 check with a note that says they must give it to someone who needs it more than they do. I’ve found the kids enjoy searching out information about various charities and appreciate being the one to decide who gets their support. I like having them learn about the many good causes there are and how many people need their help.

It also saves me some shopping for that “extra” gift and I get to enjoy looking at my cancelled checks to see who each child selected.
