Cheerful Givers at the Walk For JusticeCheerful Givers was invited to participate, along with about a hundred other nonprofits, in a “Walk For Justice” sponsored by the Headwaters Foundation. Since we had never done a walk before, I wondered if we could get volunteers to walk for 3 miles on Sunday afternoon.

What a great surprise when a couple of families arrived with little kids who seemed genuinely excited to be there. Must admit a highlight for me was when four-year-old Drew and his little sister, Lauren, came up to me with their two dollars which they said they earned by folding laundry and picking up sticks in their yard. They wanted their $2 to help buy a birthday present for another boy or girl who might not get one on their birthday. Talk about the essence of Cheerful Givers! Since then, I’ve been thinking about receiving some thousand dollar donations and really how much more the $2 meant because it came from such pure and cheerful hearts. Thank you, Drew and Lauren, for the gift you gave to me.

The walk itself was also a very pleasant experience. Beyond the cold and windy day turning into a sunny one, there was a really good feeling in being a part of a mass of people (at least 1,000) who were all there because they want to bring about greater justice — in all sorts of ways. To us, it’s seeing that less fortunate kids get birthday gifts from their parents on their one special day.
